From Campus To Career: 10 Tips For New Grads Making the Transition [Infographic]

May is one my favorite months of the year; winter has loosen its grip on the North, baseball is back, and for many students it signifies the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.  This is the time of year when students shift their focus from their academic journey towards their career path.

Yes, this particular time of year can be stressful for new graduates, but it should also be viewed as an exciting time of your life. With that in mind, the HR/Recruitment Team at Ceridian along with our colleagues in Marketing, created an infographic to help New Grads with making the transition from campus to career.  I reached out to our hiring leaders across a wide variety of departments at Ceridian (Application Support, HR, Marketing, Product Development, and Sales) and came up with their ten best career tips for new grads entering the workforce.

  1. Build Your Network for Continuous Learning! Make network building part of your daily Connect with co-workers within your team and across the organization to further learn and develop!
  1. Find A Mentor! Finding a mentor is important, but don’t force it. Often, a mentor relationship develops naturally and these relationships usually are a better fit. Find someone you trust. Build an open and honest relationship with them and solicit constructive feedback.
  1. Tap Into Transferable Skills! Remember those group assignments (Teamwork), presentations (Communication) and full course loads, along with extra-curricular activities (Time Management)? Those skills are building blocks to success in your new job!
  1. Culture Counts! Every organization has a unique culture; understanding that culture is an important factor to your career growth. Make sure you ask the right questions in an interview to ensure that you join a company that aligns with your values. Remember enjoy what you do and who you work with. 
  1. Your Personal Brand is Important! Your personal brand is just as important as your performance. It’s not just your end result, it’s how you get to that end result. Having a positive attitude and building strong relationships is crucial to having a long-standing career. People notice and remember how you make them feel.
  1. Always Learn From Your Mistakes! It is okay to fail (just don’t make it a habit). Failure is not necessarily the opposite of success, but an important part of the journey. 
  1. Take (­Calculated) Risks! Do not be afraid of taking calculated Innovation is only achieved when trying something new. Don’t be so focused on what you want that you miss out on opportunities you never imagined.
  1. Be Humble! The humble person is more likeable and a little unsure about what they don’t know. The result is that they are constantly listening and learning. They are liked by people who in turn will share their knowledge.
  1. Never Stop Learning! Your education doesn’t end when you graduate. Always look for opportunities to develop new skills and ways to apply them. It could be working on a stretch project, volunteering on a company committee, or accessing your company’s training and development resources. 
  1. Build a Fan Club! Focus on establishing a track record of delivering excellent work on a consistent basis – work that helps your co-workers and your manager achieve their goals. If you can turn your colleagues into vocal cheering advocates, that’s a huge fan club, and a powerful
